Tris(2-phenylpyridine)iridium(III)
CAS 94928-86-6
Ir(ppy)₃ is the archetypal green phosphorescent emitter — the cyclometalated iridium complex on which OLED triplet-emitter chemistry was built, used as an emissive dopant in device research and as the reference point for developing proprietary green and yellow emitters.

Where Ir(ppy)₃ is used
OLED emissive layer research
The standard green triplet emitter (~510 nm, near-unity internal quantum efficiency) doped into CBP and related hosts — the benchmark material for evaluating new host systems, device stacks and outcoupling schemes before committing to proprietary emitters.
Photoredox catalysis
A strongly reducing excited-state photocatalyst for visible-light reactions — radical additions, decarboxylative couplings and energy-transfer chemistry — increasingly specified in pharmaceutical process research.
Ligand and derivative development
The parent structure for heteroleptic and substituted-ppy emitter families; we supply the fac-isomer at documented isomeric purity as a synthesis reference and starting material.
Storage and shipping
Storage. Store sealed under inert gas, protected from light. Thermally robust; photostable in the solid state under normal handling.
Shipping. Ships in amber glass under nitrogen by commercial courier; not classified as dangerous goods in standard pack sizes.
Packaging. 250 mg · 1 g · 5 g · 25 g · Custom for pilot coating lines

Frequently asked questions
Synthesis grade or sublimed grade — which do I need?
For photoredox catalysis and solution work, synthesis grade (≥99%) is sufficient and considerably cheaper. For vacuum-deposited device stacks, take the sublimed grade — residual solvents and trace isomers in unsublimed material degrade device lifetime measurements.
How is an iridium complex priced?
Iridium is among the scarcest and most volatile-priced PGMs, so the metal leg (~29% of mass) is quoted against the day's Ir price and can be locked at order confirmation; the ligand and cyclometalation chemistry are a stated fabrication charge.
Can you supply related emitter intermediates?
Yes — 2-phenylpyridine ligands, iridium chloro-bridged dimers ([Ir(ppy)₂Cl]₂ and analogues) and custom cyclometalated complexes from 1 g, under confidentiality where required.
Do you recover iridium from our residues?
Yes — sublimation residues, mother liquors and off-spec emitter batches are assayed and the iridium credited against future supply, which matters given iridium's price level.
