45 Rh Rhodium
Homogeneous Rh catalysts

Tetracarbonyldi-μ-chlorodirhodium(I)

CAS 14523-22-9

[Rh(CO)₂Cl]₂ is the highest-rhodium-density soluble Rh(I) precursor at ~53% Rh — the volatile chloro-bridged carbonyl dimer used in carbonylation catalysis, rhodium CVD and as an economical entry to Rh(I) complex synthesis.

Applications

Where [Rh(CO)₂Cl]₂ is used

Carbonylation catalysis

A direct precursor to the rhodium carbonyl iodide species active in methanol carbonylation and related industrial acetyl chemistry, and a catalyst platform for hydroformylation research.

Rhodium CVD and thin films

Its volatility and clean decomposition make it a preferred source for rhodium film deposition on electrodes, mirrors and contact surfaces.

Economical Rh(I) building block

At ~53% rhodium it carries more metal per gram than any phosphine or diene complex, so the chloride bridges can be cleaved with ligands to reach a wide range of Rh(I) species at the lowest metal-accounting overhead.

Handling & logistics

Storage and shipping

Storage. Store cold (2–8 °C), sealed under inert gas, protected from light. Volatile and sublimable; keep containers tightly closed.

Shipping. Ships in sealed glass under nitrogen; CO-release handling note supplied with SDS.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What handling precautions apply?

The complex releases carbon monoxide on decomposition and is volatile at ambient temperature — handle in a fume hood, keep containers sealed, and store cold to limit sublimation losses over time.

How is pricing structured?

Rhodium is the most volatile-priced PGM. Every quote states its fixing reference and validity window; we recommend locking the metal leg the day you confirm the order rather than the day you pay.

What documentation is included?

Every lot ships with a certificate of analysis stating assayed metal content, plus an English SDS. ICP trace-metal panels are available on request.

Do you take back spent material?

Yes — residues, spent catalyst and off-spec lots are assayed on receipt and the recovered rhodium credited against your next order.
